eclectic and experimental australian music

NWA Erratic News, 27th August 2010.

The first in an erratic and unplanned series of updates from the NWA universe.

Sasha Margolis from AUTOMATING & CONSTANTLIGHT was a guest on the NWA radio show mid-August. We played his new CONSTANTLIGHT EP in full – which you can now download free at constantlight.bandcamp.com.

New Sydney producer GHOST_ also appeared on the NWA show recently and played a live set, backed by guitarist BLACK PYRAMID. He’s made the full set available for free download at ghostmusic.bandcamp.com

More free release material – from LUCIA DRAFT (NWA2). Her debut EP ‘A Pile Of Skeletons’ is now available for free download via Lesstalk Records.

ALPS (from NWA3 and our 2010 St Petersburg show) has a new (very limited) split live cassette with New Zealand’s Forest Spirits — get them before they’re gone at alps.bigcartel.com.

Another release featuring two artists from NWA4 – Sydney’s TEXTILE AUDIO and GENTLEFORCE. ‘The Pomegranate EP’ is TEXTILE AUDIO’s debut EP, featuring her unique mix of experimental sound and contemporary opera, released via Feral Media. The release comes complete with a GENTLEFORCE remix, who will shortly become one of the few Australian artists to feature on a ‘Wire Tapper’ compilation CD from the renowned Wire Magazine.

TOM HALL, who recently played our ‘Refraction vs New Weird Australia’ show has been signed under his AXXONN guise by Brisbane’s Useless Art Records. He’s released a new single ‘Lets Get it Straight’, ahead of a new album release in mid-October. axxonnband.blogspot.com

‘New Editions’ Label Launched

New Weird Australia is proud to announce the launch of its ‘New Editions’ label – a new imprint from New Weird Australia, focusing on single artist releases. Having released a series of nine free compilations since July 2009, New Weird Australia has garnered significant interest both at home and overseas, and thus a move into an ongoing label format was both obvious and necessary.

New Editions releases will be available in two formats: a high-quality digital release (priced as a ‘pay what you like’ model, with a minimum of $0) and in a run of 50 limited-edition CDs available from artist shows & NWA events.

The first release for the New Editions label features Melbourne’s CAUGHT SHIP (pictured above) with their 8-track EP ‘Start Dencing Dad, Start Dencing’. Future releases are currently being scheduled, at a release rate of around one every two or three months.

Find more information & download details for ‘Start Dencing Dad, Start Dencing’ on the Release page.

Video: Erasers at The Red Rattler, July 2010

Erasers are a two-piece band from Perth, that started mid 2009 with Rebecca Orchard on vocals and Rupert Thomas on instruments. They formed with the desire to create and produce music completely on their own. With little recording experience and borrowed equipment, Erasers produced and released their debut self-titled release upon forming as a band. The result is songs made up of primitive & tribal beats, melodic guitar loops, atmospheric synth and chanting vocals; creating what has been described as dreamy yet somewhat disconcerting post-punk.

This single-camera take was recorded at New Weird Australia at The Red Rattler, Marrickville, Sydney, 23rd July 2010 by Paul Threthni.
