Analogue to Digital 7: White Light/White Heat

Scitech, in partnership with New Weird Australia, presents a special pre-public holiday Analogue to Digital on Wednesday January 25th. This mid-summer edition features a diverse line-up of Perth experimental musicians who all work towards developing a certain sonic intensity and ‘heat’ in their music, either through harsh distortion or spectral ambience. Acts playing at Scitech include Ourobonic Plague, Craig McElhinney, Furchick, No Hand Path, K Wilson, Brain Full of Light and guest speaker Adam Burgess, as well as a High Voltage Show in the Lottery West Science Theatre.

Adam Burgess (Brown, Potato Stars, Hoi Polloi) is a leading figure in ‘D.I.Y instrument building’ in Perth. From recording Midland grunge kids Frozen Ocean onto VHS to holding a percussive protest performance inside an abandoned former iconic Independent Perth music venue, Adam is a true stalwart of the local experimental scene.

Brain Full Of Light is the laptop duo of Sam Gillies and Mitchell Mollison. Forming in 2011 at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Brain Full Of Light is a noise project that draws on multiple compositional approaches to free improvisation in a laptop context. Alternating between ambient and harsh sound worlds, Brain Full Of Light are guided by a joint interest in sound as texture, and music performance as a stream of consciousness.

Craig McElhinney’s output is prolific and his collaborations are many, yet a remarkable consistency marks everything that he does. Deeply inspired by Sir David Attenborough and Bruce Lee, Craig approaches his practice with the tranquillity of a humble village craftsmen. Craig does more with a 12-string acoustic guitar and a sampler than many five or six-piece bands dream of.

Furchick is the alias of Dr Claire Pannell, certified local Science-Arts instigator/ring-leader. Through her extensive periods of residency in New York and New Zealand, Claire has played in bands with members of Gang Gang Dance, Jackie O Motherfucker and IUD, as well as playing drums for Air Traffic Controllers along with Matador Records co-founder Gerard Cosloy. Claire is a genuine musical treasure laying way under the radar of the West Australian public.

K Wilson is the most myserious and enigmatic performer on the line-up. Little is known of said ‘K’, other than their wonderful eery track ‘Boulder’s Theme’ up on the Artifactory’s bandcamp, as part of Noizemaschin!! #5’.

Ourobonic Plague is the moniker of a one Mr Nick Sweepah, a key player amongst a wave of challenging new electronic music in Perth. Associated with Perth electronic collective The Community as well as Good Company, Emerald Cabal and Owls (Label). Nick’s music has been described as “ambient doom bass drone attack ‘copters circling their prey on alien ice worlds for eternity.”

No Hand Path is the solo harsh noise project of Lee Yoresh; bass player of much-loved local hardcore ‘power violence’ punk band Suffer. Lee describes his music as “Vegan Straight Edge Noise for Children”. Brace yourself for a sonic onslaught.

Analogue to Digital is a sound art and experimental music event held at Scitech for adults. The event highlights sound artists working in the fields of music that intersect with science and technology. There are performances and a short talk, plus the Scitech exhibits are always open.

Unpopular Music 2011

img: Secret Birds

Unpopular Music returns to Sydney on Saturday December 17th, raising cash for FBi and featuring eight bands over two venues. Unpopular Music 2011 sees four of Sydney’s underground & experimental music promoters working together for the first time – New Weird Australia, Octopus Pi, Sound Series and Refraction – staging two shows in one evening.

The late show (9pm) at Dirty Shirlows in Marrickville features Brisbane psych-rock ex-pats Strange Forces (back on Aussie soil after tearing up a storm in Berlin over the last two years), Sydney drone-grunge four piece Zeahorse, former Brisbane residents Secret Birds (one of the last artists, and few Australians, to feature on Pitchfork’s now defunct Altered Zones blog) and Scattered Order (fully re-energised and at a new creative peak, following the addition of Shane Fahey to the lineup earlier this year).

At 6pm, the early show at Hardware sees Thomas William and Scissor Lock launching their debut collaborative album ‘Jewelz‘, with support from Melbourne’s Monlith, Und and Anna Chase. The event also features DJs Paul Gough (Pimmon), Jack Shit and Octopus Pi, with a ‘Magical Audio Tour’ between venues, leaving Hardware at 8:45pm. Tickets are $12 on the door (which gets entry to both shows).

You can download a free compilation featuring all the artists playing at Unpopular Music 2011 – including exclusive unreleased tracks from Zeahorse and Thomas William vs Scissor Lock at newweirdaustralia.bandcamp.com.

NWA Live: Rites Wild, Black Vanilla & Pimmon

New Weird Australia presents
RITES WILD
BLACK VANILLA

& special guest PIMMON

FRIDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2011
$10 / 7PM / ALL AGES

BLACK WIRE, 219 Parramatta Rd, Annandale, Sydney

RITES WILD
Rites Wild from Adelaide makes monotone pop with 80′s analogue keys and good intentions. “sits nicely alongside Maria Minerva, Fabulous Diamonds and Nite Jewel… Rites Wild cloaks ritualistic minimalism in foggy casio drones, stony delivery, and lush synth delays” – Altered Zones

BLACK VANILLA
(with members of Guerre, Collarbones and Marseilles)
Black Vanilla is the brainchild of gender-bending beatmaker Romeo aka Juliet, convicted ladykiller Extra Smooth aka The Sex and slutty ho-bag Sean Lockhart, creating the most reprehensible R’n'B boyband supergroup of the 21st century. Borrowing from only the sleaziest and most disgusting 90s R’n'B reference points Black Vanilla will get you wet in the whitest possible fashion.

PIMMON
Over the past decade and a half, Australia’s electronic godfather Pimmon (known to friends as Paul Gough) has carved out a unique space for himself through producing a series of masterfully executed excursions into abstract electronic sound. His new release The Oansome Orbit is out this month on Room40.

TSH:XVI & NEW WEIRD AUSTRALIA presents SPARTAK ALBUM LAUNCH

[TSH] presents a special night in conjunction with New Weird Australia to launch ‘Nippon‘, the third album by Canberra electro-acoustic duo Spartak and first on NWA’s New Editions imprint.

Saturday 8th October 8pm
The Silent Hour
Level 1, 77-83 William St, Woolloomooloo, Sydney

SPARTAK
Formed by Shoeb Ahmad and Evan Dorrian in 2007, Spartak have performed regularly around Australia, SE Asia and Japan alongside the likes of My Disco, Lawrence English, Lucky Dragons, Minamo and Andrew Pekler with their textural improvisations on guitar, drum kit, electronics and other found sounds . ‘Nippon’ was recorded while on tour in Japan earlier this year and suitably follows their last album ‘Verona’ (released on the English label Low Point) with it’s opposing influences of sound manipulation and hardcore/indie rock.

Also performing on the night are:

BRAIN DRAIN
Brain Drain is a Sydney based artist who straddles the divide between structure and improvisation, often revelling in the contrast between the two. His primarily guitar-driven pieces centre around creating both mood and rhythm through loops and using this repetition as a foundation on which to improvise. Since 2010, Brain Drain has released three albums: a self-titled debut cassette, the follow-up Wahine Division, and the collaborative album, Popolice Versus Brain Drain. braindrain3053.tumblr.com/

THE DEADLY NIGHTSHADES
The Deadly Nightshades are a brother sister duo making experimental vocal folk music in their hometown of Sydney. They record their voices in single, raw takes, and use these recordings to experiment with panning, layering and tuning.

Forenzics, Domeyko/Gonzalez, Jusgo Mosh & Robot House – Live at FBi Social

New Weird Australia & Octopus pi present the third and final New Weird Australia live event at FBi Social in Kings Cross on Thursday 16th June 2011 – rounding off the series in fine style, with a live simulcast broadcast on FBi.

Headlining this special night of Sydney-centric artists will be Forenzics – the local collective renowned for their experimental and improvisational slant on noise, psych, drone, art rock & post punk. The band will be launching their third album, ‘Build Ruins‘, a collaboration with Japanese electronic artist Ryota Yamamura and Joe Cummins – released on June 13th on New Weird Australia’s ‘New Editions’ label.

Forenzics will be joined by Domeyko/Gonzalez, the experimental / electronic Sydney duo of James Domeyko and Jaie Gonzalez, mixing a wild melee of instrumentation and sounds, and landing somewhere between Fuck Buttons and The Dirty Three. The band are celebrating the launch of their mini-album ‘No Way Back’, the follow-up to their acclaimed debut EP ‘The Circle Trilogy‘.

Also on the line-up, ‘disillusioned punks’ Jusgo Mosh – diverting their energy into noise / improv / psych territory – and four piece experimentalists Robot House, stirring up an eclectic mishmash of turntables, table, guitars and mixed electronics. Visuals on the night come from Redcell.

The event also marks the second anniversary of the New Weird Australia project, and to celebrate, FBi Radio will be broadcasting a live simulcast of the event on the ‘New Weird Australia’ radio show from 9pm. Tune in on 94.5FM in Sydney, or stream the show online at fbiradio.com.

This one-off event kick starts at 8pm and tickets $10 on the door.

Description.

New Weird Australia & Octopus pi present the second in a series of live events at FBi Social in Kings Cross on Thursday 19th May 2011, titled ‘ The Sound Of Young Canberra‘.

The night takes it cue from New Weird Australia’s compilation of the same name, released late last year, and featuring some of the finest eclectic and experimental music being made in the oft-maligned capital.

Headlining the night in their debut Sydney appearance are Savages – evolving out of the renowned Canberra act Spartak, and featuring a fine pedigree of artists – including Hellosquare label boss Shoeb Ahmad (guitars and vocals); his fellow Spartak bandmate, Evan Dorrian (nord, vocals, percussion), along with Matt Lustri (bass) and John Wilton (drums).

Canberra four-piece Kasha were one of the stand-out artists from the The Sound Of Young Canberra compilation, reworking the traditional notion of rock music, fusing tension, repetition and experimentation into their sound. Their recent 7″ single was released on Hellosquare, recorded and mixed by Casey Rice (Dirty Three, Pikelet).

Influenced by the likes of Fennesz and Xiu Xiu, show opener Rueben Ingall processes vocals and guitar through purpose-built patches to create a beautifully idiosyncratic melee of sound.

Savages’ Shoeb Ahmad also pitches up the turntables to DJ for the night, and there are visuals from local crew Eightfilters.

Doors 8pm. Tickets $10 on the door. New Weird Australia at FBi Social (Kings Cross Hotel) is the second in an ongoing monthly series – for updates of other events in the series, follow us on Facebook for updates.

In support, Sydney producer Cleptoclectics faces off against local compatriot Scissor Lock (fresh from the launch of his Collarbones collaboration), in the latest in their ongoing bouts of noise battles taking place in dark rooms across the city. DJs Stupid Canon & Kimb Galercan fill the spaces along with projections from visual artist, Jeronimo.
