New Weird Australia presents AXXONN Full National Tour 2011

AXXONN gathers up his keyboards and subsonic fuzz later this month to jaunt around the country one more time before heading overseas indefinitely ahead of label commitments (Arlen / Southern Record Distribution) for his album Let’s Get It Straight, which releases globally on February 14th. The tour is presented by NEW WEIRD AUSTRALIA, marking their inaugural Australian excursion after a string of successful Sydney events and nearly two years of compilation and artists releases through the label.

Tom Hall (aka AXXONN) said ‘NWA have been kind enough to take a liking to AXXONN which is great, it gives me one last chance to leave some permanent fractures in some of my favourite venues, catch up with old friends and make some loud noise for my favourite places in Oz before leaving….at this stage it’s indefinite, I don’t know when I’ll be back’.

NEW WEIRD AUSTRALIA has called upon a diverse and eclectic range of acts to feature alongside AXXONN, including BREATHING SHRINE, MYSTIC EYES, SCATTERED ORDER, KASHA, AMBROSE CHAPEL, NO ZU, DOT.AY, ERASERS, CONSTANT LIGHT, OCEANS, CRAIG MCELHINNEY, SPHERES, DIE ON PLANES, GILBERT FAWN, DUO, PEON and BORGIA .

‘New Editions’ Announces Releases from Paneye & TANTRUMS

New Weird Australia’s label imprint, ‘New Editions’, has announced the next two releases in its ongoing artist series – ‘Lost In A Dark Aquarium’ from Sydney solo artist PANEYE, and ‘Anomie’ from Melbourne quartet, TANTRUMS.

As PANEYE, Will Treffry has produced three full-length, self-released solo albums in the last two years, and the triad of quality, originality and volume begs the question as to why his PANEYE nondeplum isn’t a more recognisable name by now. His blend of psych-folk, ambient electronica, shoegaze and dream pop certainly echoes work by overseas contemporaries such as BEACH HOUSE, DUCKTAILS or BOARDS OF CANADA. Whether this release, his fourth full-length, will do anything to change that remains unclear – suffice to say Treffry’s notion that ‘Lost In A Dark Aquarium’ consists of twenty-four “ambient ditties” underplays what is a unique and singular release from an emerging Australian talent.

Since their inception eighteen months ago, TANTRUMS have been playing regular gigs in their home town, dropping selected dates in Newcastle and Sydney, contributing to compilations and establishing a solid network of friends, collaborators and champions. Rather than crashing headlong into the studio, TANTRUMS have chosen to bide their time, choose their words and only commit to a release when the time was right. Their shared love of artists such as KRAFTWERK, DEAD CAN DANCE, NINE INCH NAILS and PANTHA DU PRINCE informs their ‘midi-evil disco’ / industrial sound, which – through reviews of their live shows – has invited comparisons with HTRK, SIOUXSIE, IKE YARD, TELEPATHE & PiL. Some of this can be found on the under-stated single release ‘Anomie’, which comes backed with remixes from COLLARBONES, WORNG and an ambient makeover from TANTRUMS themselves.

‘Lost In A Dark Aquarium’ and ‘Anomie’ are available in two formats: a run of limited-edition CDs – housed in a gatefold card sleeve, with artwork inserts – available from artist shows & New Weird Australia events; and a 320kbps / FLAC digital release, available free from newweirdaustralia.com.

New Weird Australia Releases Exclusive New Canberra Compilation

Earlier this year, we alluded to a departure in format in our compilation series.  Up until now, the series has effectively been a snapshot in time of new, weird Australian music, dropping once every two months.  Over nine compilation albums, we faithfully represented that broad and loose concept, however the time has come to sharpen our focus.  The series will now morph into more structured compilation releases – structured either by genre, geography or theme, or structured by the guiding hand of a guest curator.

The first of such releases scores on two counts – ‘The Sound Of Young Canberra‘ is the first release to be selected by a guest curator, in this case the double-header combination of Shoeb Ahmad (hellosQuare) and Tim Guthrie (Dream Damage). It is also the first compilation to focus exclusively on one geographical area, and what better place to start than our oft-scorned nation’s capital.

Together, Shoeb & Tim have been a beacon for new Canberra music  – via Shoeb’s label and tireless commitment to live events, and Tim’s outstanding blog, where many Canberra artist receive their first online editorial.  This new collaboration between that pair is a wild and truly eclectic mix of styles; some familiar, some entirely new; some residents, some expartiates – featuring Pollen Trio, Teddy Trouble, Spartak, Jonny Telafone, From The South, Readymen, Reuben Ingall, Danger Beach, Shoeb Ahmad, Assassins 88, Kasha and Bum Creek.

The compilation is available for FREE download from New Weird Australia – visit the compilation page for full sleeve notes and download information.

New Weird Australia at Sound Summit 2010

This Is Not Art returns to Newcastle next weekend (1st-4th October), and once again the town will be awash with experimental, underground & alternative art for the long weekend. There’s a truly impressive line-up of artists to catch, in addition to the massive catalogue of talks, workshops and panels. New Weird Australia will be there, representing at two Sound Summit events – “The Grand Debate – Arbiters of Taste” on Saturday 2nd, and “Outside The Square” on Sunday 3rd.

We’ll also thrilled to bear witness to the various showcases & live events – all featuring stellar Australian artists such as Tantrums, Scattered Order, No Anchor, Cock Safari, Black Math, Blank Realm, Nhomea, They Live, Anna Chase, ii, Polyfox & the Union of the Most Ghosts, kyü, Holy Balm, Collarbones, Dot.AY, Ten Thousand Free Men and Their Families and many more.

The Grand Debate – Arbiters of Taste
2.30pm – 4.00pm: Panel
This Is Not Art festival club (267-269 King St)

Facilitator: Kirsty Brown (Sound Summit)
Participants: Adam Gauci (Curse Ov Dialect), Andrew Ramadge (mess+noise, news.com.au), Elmo Keep (The Internet Is Punk), Everett True (Collapse Board), Fenella Kernebone (ABC Art Nation, Triple J Sound Lab), Stuart Buchanan (New Weird Australia).

The Grand Debate examines the unique relationship musicians have with critics – whether professional or armchair and discuss: who are the guardians of ‘taste’, why do they matter and what happens when they love or dislike an artist. Topics will include; AMP/AIR/ARIAs – do any of them really matter and why? What to do if JJJ won’t play your music and Rolling Stone won’t give you a cover? Why do we see artists like Curse ov Dialect, Naked on the Vague, Gray Daturas, Oren Ambarchi, Ben Frost and The Necks bring reviewed in The Wire, yet they cannot get local coverage? We angrily explore how media channels can make or break bands and what is the future of music reportage in Australia.

Outside The Square
12pm – 1.30pm: Panel
TPI Auditorium (ground floor, 231 King St)

Facilitator: Kirsty Brown (Sound Summit)
Participants: Ian Rogers (No Anchor, Ambrose Chapel), Emily Hasselhoof (Baaddd, Hoofkake), Jason Forrest (Cock Rock Disco, Nightshifters, DJ Donna Summer; USA), Stuart Buchanan (New Weird Australia)

The path to success as a rock star/superstar DJ/internationally acclaimed troubadour is littered with contradictory messages as to what and what not to do. Both “old” (write + record + tour +… so on) and “new” (facespace + iTwit + annoy all and sundry) methods of spreading the word about your creative talents seem to be the best way to be heard; however a select group of people manage to forge their own niche by distinctly playing ‘outside the rules’.

‘New Editions’ Label Launched

New Weird Australia is proud to announce the launch of its ‘New Editions’ label – a new imprint from New Weird Australia, focusing on single artist releases. Having released a series of nine free compilations since July 2009, New Weird Australia has garnered significant interest both at home and overseas, and thus a move into an ongoing label format was both obvious and necessary.

New Editions releases will be available in two formats: a high-quality digital release (priced as a ‘pay what you like’ model, with a minimum of $0) and in a run of 50 limited-edition CDs available from artist shows & NWA events.

The first release for the New Editions label features Melbourne’s CAUGHT SHIP (pictured above) with their 8-track EP ‘Start Dencing Dad, Start Dencing’. Future releases are currently being scheduled, at a release rate of around one every two or three months.

Find more information & download details for ‘Start Dencing Dad, Start Dencing’ on the Release page.
