RITES WILD
Rites Wild from Adelaide makes monotone pop with 80′s analogue keys and good intentions. “sits nicely alongside Maria Minerva, Fabulous Diamonds and Nite Jewel… Rites Wild cloaks ritualistic minimalism in foggy casio drones, stony delivery, and lush synth delays” – Altered Zones
BLACK VANILLA
(with members of Guerre, Collarbones and Marseilles)
Black Vanilla is the brainchild of gender-bending beatmaker Romeo aka Juliet, convicted ladykiller Extra Smooth aka The Sex and slutty ho-bag Sean Lockhart, creating the most reprehensible R’n'B boyband supergroup of the 21st century. Borrowing from only the sleaziest and most disgusting 90s R’n'B reference points Black Vanilla will get you wet in the whitest possible fashion.
PIMMON
Over the past decade and a half, Australia’s electronic godfather Pimmon (known to friends as Paul Gough) has carved out a unique space for himself through producing a series of masterfully executed excursions into abstract electronic sound. His new release The Oansome Orbit is out this month on Room40.
New Weird Australia announces the fourth release in the artist release series New Editions – the debut release from Melbourne’s TANTRUMS, titled ‘Anomie’.
A shared love of artists such as KRAFTWERK, DEAD CAN DANCE, NINE INCH NAILS and PANTHA DU PRINCE informs their ‘midi-evil disco’ / industrial sound, which – through reviews of their live shows – has invited comparisons with HTRK, SIOUXSIE, IKE YARD, TELEPATHE & PiL.
Setting forth with reverb-drenched vocal, spun through an echoing vocoder, ‘Anomie’ steadily layers washes of synthesisers – seemingly gaining ground note-by-note – and almost stubbornly refuses to show its hand. Each player waits their turn, before breaking into a final rush and flourish of electronic and organic instrumentation – showcasing the full spectrum of sounds now at their disposal.
‘Anomie’ is available in two formats: a run of limited-edition CDs – housed in a gatefold card sleeve, with artwork inserts by the band – available from TANTRUMS shows & New Weird Australia events; and a 320kbps digital release, available as a free download. The single comes backed with remixes from COLLARBONES, WORNG and an ambient makeover from TANTRUMS themselves. UPDATE: LIMITED CDS NOW SOLD OUT.
New Editions, Edition Four.

“‘Anomie’ sees vocoded tones trailing out over a backdrop of ebbing, doomy keys and drones that’s lulling and menacing at the same time, only for distorted drum machine rhythms and explosion effects to suddenly lock into precise focus as the track begins to ascend towards a fiery conclusion amidst clattering live drums, eerily delicate piano keys and distorted pulsing digital effects … an impressive debut offering from Tantrums that left me wanting to hear more from this Melbourne band.” Cyclic Defrost, March 2011
“An amazing piece of ambient, experimental music that gives a big nod to Justin Broadrick’s Final alias. Simple, repetitive piano stabs and guitar drones are interwoven with heavily bit-crushed, distorted beats that are spaced so far apart that they almost blend into the atmospheric textures of the guitars and pianos rather than propel the track along. Stunning.” 3D World, February 2011

New Weird Australia is a not-for-profit initiative designed to promote and support new eclectic and experimental Australian music. Our current projects include a series of artist releases on our ‘New Editions’ label, a free download compilation series, a weekly show on Sydney’s FBi Radio and an irregular program of live events. Contributions from Australian artists are welcomed and encouraged.
(June 2010) Well known experimental musicians in their own right, MARCUS WHALE (also known as SCISSOR LOCK) and TRAVIS COOK (who performs as CYST IMPALED) moved into unique territory in 2010, recording as alternative pop duo COLLARBONES. With a debut album shortly to be released, Marcus and Travis joined Stu Buchanan on NEW WEIRD AUSTRALIA in June 2010 to talk about their evolving project and to play live in the studio. They also discussed their (then) forthcoming live appearance with Melbourne’s PSUCHE. In addition to hearing the tracks ‘Kill Off The Vowels’ and ‘Beaman Park’, we also hear them play a cover of the PSUCHE track ‘I See A Wolf’ and preview the new album from PSUCHE with the track, ‘Recognise’.
