NWA Podcast #6. The Necks, Interview

(February 2010) THE NECKS are one of Australia’s most innovative cult bands, channeling experimental, avant garde, jazz, ambient and minimal sounds via a back catalogue that runs to fifteen albums over twenty years. Each of THE NECKS also has an equally impressive solo and collaborative career – however they always find time to regroup and return to Sydney at least once a year for one of their renowned live shows.

Ahead of their Sydney show in February 2010, Chris Abrahams from THE NECKS joined Stu & Danny on NEW WEIRD AUSTRALIA Radio Show for a chat about their ever-evolving career and, in particular, the new album ‘Silverwater’ – a single 67 minute piece, representing some of their best work to date.

Alister Spence Trio

Alister Spence Trio

  • Alister Spence (Australian Art Orchestra, Ed Kuepper and The Laughing Clowns, Wanderlust) - piano , samples
  • Lloyd Swanton (The Necks, The Catholics) – double bass
  • Toby Hall (The World According To James)- drums, glockenspiel

As a band of long standing collaborators, Alister Spence Trio has been consistently carving out a name for themselves, both in Australia and internationally, as one of the country’s most exciting and original improvising and new music bands. In the more than ten years that they have been together they have been steadily moving into a distinctive, unique and mesmerising world of sound.

They have released four CD’s on the Rufus Records label distributed by Universal Music Australia. The second and third CD’s, Flux and Mercury, were both nominated for an ARIA Award (best Jazz Album 2003, 2007) and have attracted great reviews both here and in UK, Canada, USA and Japan.

Their 2009 CD/DVD ‘fit’ saw the launch of a new project that blended (or ‘fits’) texture, sound scape, free improvisation and editing, while still delivering the strong melody and seemingly effortless interplay that are hallmarks of this longstanding collaboration. The CD is accompanied by a DVD, featuring the work of film artist Louise Curham, set to the band’s music. Louise is highly regarded in the experimental film world for her work using ‘obsolete media’, hand worked super 8 films.

The band’s profile is steadily growing overseas. In 2006 they toured UK and Canada performing many festivals including the prestigious International Festival de Jazz de Montreal. In 2008 they played at the Tokyo Jazz festival 2008 and also concerts with musicians such as Satoko Fujii (Tzadik recording artist, Japan), Jim O’Rourke (Nurse With Wound, Ex Sonic Youth etc, USA) Alister toured Europe October/November this year, 2009, playing with Tony Buck (the Necks) and Joe Williamson (Eugene Chadbourne, Louis Moholo etc). Fit has been described as: ‘’A massive breakthrough…enthralling music.’ Sydney Morning Herald

In Australia, the trio was chosen by Brian Eno along with the Necks and Pivot, to play at the Luminous Festival at the Sydney Opera House in June 2009.
